Thinking Aloud
Importance of Learning Chinese
Chinese language education is rapidly becoming a high priority for the United States, in both public and private sectors. At BYU alone (one of the premiere centers for the study of Chinese in the country), 500 students enroll in Chinese courses each semester. Even high schoolers can get involved. Federal funding is at the root of this past summer's STARTALK program at BYU for high school students. In this edition of Thinking Aloud, the conversation touches on both the STARTALK experience itself and the broader context of the emerging importance of the Chinese languages to Western society. Our guests are professor Dana Bourgerie of the BYU Chinese Flagship Program, Provo high hchool teacher and STARTALK instructor Susan Gong, and Orem High School student Hailey Kern.—Original airdate: 9/12/2007
