Mental Illness and Solitary Confinement in U.S. Prisons
Although it was originally meant to be temporary and rare, solitary confinement has become common and sometimes of long duration in current U.S. prisons. Studies abound showing that it has a very serious effect on prisoners' mental illness but it continues to be practiced almost everywhere.  On today's Thinking Aloud, we discuss how this state of affairs came to be.—Original airdate: 8/4/2014
