Media Influences on Social Aggression
Is the jury still out on the effects of violence as portrayed in the media? Does a fictional murder or rape in a movie produce real murderers or rapists? Recent years have brought endless studies on this important question, with mixed findings and a lot of people still wrangling over it. Meanwhile, violence is only one type of aggressive behavior. What else might be portrayed in the media that an impressionable viewer might later imitate? What about gossip, social exclusion, mean-spirited behaviors? To what extent do we mimic these fictions? Find out as we discuss, with Dr. Sarah Marie Coyne,  of the School of Family Life at BYU, how the media influences our social aggressive behavior.—Original airdate: 6/2/2008
