Homesteading in the 20th Century
The Fifties in America present a time of unique cultural juxtapositions. While much of America urbanized and toyed with new technologies, the government opened uninhabited lands for homesteading. Brian Cannon is one of the few historians to study these postwar homesteaders, the challenges they faced, and the place they hold in western history. We're discussing his new book, Reopening the Frontier: Homesteading in the Modern West.—Original airdate: 5/20/2009
