Photographer Timothy O'Sullivan and the American West
Trained in  the workshop of the famous Mathew Brady during the American Civil War, Timothy O'Sullivan was chosen as the official government photographer for the 1867 King Expedition which explored, studied, and documented huge new territories of the Far West in California, Nevada, Idaho, and Utah. Given great leeway in terms of what and how he photographed the vast landscapes few Euro-Americans had seen before, O'Sullivan's resulting body of work was and is a monument to the visual possibilities of photography.  His work is the subject of a major BYU MOA exhibition in Spring 2014. —Original airdate: 4/4/2014
