Thinking Aloud
Marc Lynch: Middle East Change as Down But Not Out
Today's guest on "Thinking Aloud" would encourage us to take a long view on the Middle East. He sees the events of the Arab Spring as needed precursors for lasting change of some kind. He also puts Al Quaeda and Isis in perspective. While the threats they represent are serious, the groups are in the vast minority inside Islam, can only thrive when dysfunctional states allow them to, and are not, to use his words, “ten feet tall” or “big monsters”that we can’t successfully deal with. It’s a surprising but also highly informed view and one that he has come to over decades of first-hand experience in the Middle East.—Original airdate: 4/2/2015
